League of Professional System Administrators Madison

abraham's picture
LOPSA-Madison, like LOPSA, is dedicated to the advancement of the profession and practice of System Administration. Toward those ends, this chapter aims to facilitate building a community of local contacts for us to share our experiences, solutions, tips and techniques on addressing technical and professional issues we encounter. We are a platform agnostic organization, like LOPSA itself, and, as such, we welcome and encourage network managers, Windows and UNIX systems administrators, desktop support technicians, and anyone else that manages computer systems to join our community. LOPSA-Madison meets monthly on the first Thursday of the month. LOPSA membership is not required for attendance and participation in LOPSA-Madison, but joining LOPSA is strongly encouraged. We invite everyone in the system administration community to present topics from their expertise or experiences. People are available to assist others in writing and performing presentations, as well. Join the mailing list for announcements and discussoins for LOPSA-Madison, join us in #lopsa-madison via IRC, or see the chapters and affiliates page to find a local group in your area. If there is no local group in your area hop into the IRC channel and ask about other system administrators in your area.

Presentation: Linux in Science (A Case Study)

Find out how clusters of Linux computers are being used together with the Large Hadron Collider to find the elusive Higgs boson particle!

Physicists at the University of Wisconsin have joined the largest science project ever: the quest to find the Higgs boson--one of the last unseen elementary particles. Finally, protons are running marathons at nearly the speed of light around the Large Hadron Collider, and every collision generates immense amounts of data. This data is stored and analyzed on a world-wide grid of Linux clusters, and Wisconsin's is one of the busiest.

Will Maier will introduce the project and some of the physics behind it before describing in detail how the University of Wisconsin uses Linux to store and analyze more than 500 TB of LHC data and run 30,000 hours of computations each day.

Setting in OpenOffice.org messed up? Scared you're going to mess up your partitions?Heard you could get a free operating system, but not sure where to start?

You've come to the right place!

Ubuntu Hours are a time when new users can come and ask questions without being afraid they will be made to feel stupid by experienced users. It's also a time when you won't feel crowded out by other discussions. It may not always be 1-on-1 support, but it will be close and might even be a better ratio!

--------------------------------------------------------

As for Ubuntu Hour instructors, in the words of Ubuntu Loco leader Anthony Hook:

'It’s a pretty laid-back event with little expectations. If nobody asks one week, maybe you’ll talk to 4 people the next week. It’s a good time to get some coffee, catch up on some work, or just browse the Internet.

Surviving the IPocalypse: IPv6, Linux, and You

Everyone who has a presence on the web is going to be forced to more about IPv6 in the coming years. Get ahead of the curve! Quick, grab your smartphone, e-reader, computer and family (in that order), pack some supplies, and head for the hills! (except in Kansas, which is too flat.) The Internet as we currently know it is coming to an end! We're running out of host addresses! In a matter of months, not decades they will all be used up. Are you prepared for the single biggest network event since broadband? Say goodbye to your old friends like 209.85.225.99 and hello to 2001:4860:b007::6a (google.com). The existing IP version 4 numbering system with 32-bit addresses is nearly exhausted. In 2013, the last one will be gone. History! But, there is hope of rescue. It's not the cavalry, it's the Internet protocol version 6, with new-fangled 128-bit addresses, and it will impact every networked digital device, router and service you use. What does this all mean?
