What's a Lightning Talk? It's a short ten minute presentation that will give you an introductory taste of some Linux related topic. You'll get just enough information for you to decide if you want to explore it further on your own. There is no general theme, so topics run the gamut.

Topics (and Presenters) Include:
Paintbrushes, Toothpicks, and Debian: A Tale of Linux in the Developing World (Grant Dobbe)
Quick Practical Introduction to Emacs (Eric Veenendaal)
The Case for Linux (Brad Stone)

What the Job Recruiters Don't Tell You (Bill Gaber)

Presentation: Linux in Science (A Case Study)

Find out how clusters of Linux computers are being used together with the Large Hadron Collider to find the elusive Higgs boson particle!

Physicists at the University of Wisconsin have joined the largest science project ever: the quest to find the Higgs boson--one of the last unseen elementary particles. Finally, protons are running marathons at nearly the speed of light around the Large Hadron Collider, and every collision generates immense amounts of data. This data is stored and analyzed on a world-wide grid of Linux clusters, and Wisconsin's is one of the busiest.

Will Maier will introduce the project and some of the physics behind it before describing in detail how the University of Wisconsin uses Linux to store and analyze more than 500 TB of LHC data and run 30,000 hours of computations each day.

MadLUG presents: May Ubuntu Hour

Setting in OpenOffice.org messed up? Scared you're going to mess up your partitions?Heard you could get a free operating system, but not sure where to start?

You've come to the right place!

Ubuntu Hours are a time when new users can come and ask questions without being afraid they will be made to feel stupid by experienced users. It's also a time when you won't feel crowded out by other discussions. It may not always be 1-on-1 support, but it will be close and might even be a better ratio!

--------------------------------------------------------

As for Ubuntu Hour instructors, in the words of Ubuntu Loco leader Anthony Hook:

'It’s a pretty laid-back event with little expectations. If nobody asks one week, maybe you’ll talk to 4 people the next week. It’s a good time to get some coffee, catch up on some work, or just browse the Internet. I’ll probably even take pictures of where I am each week.
